The Fed will not raise interest rates this week

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Fed was expected not to raise the interest rates this week. Even so, the uncertainty of the interest rate hike of the Fed has a negative impact on the movement of rupiah against the US dollar.

Consumer prices in the US fell in the last month. It indicated that the inflation rate was low. Overall, consumer prices rose only 0.2 percent during the 12 months.

US inflation data that came out last August showed minus 0.1 percent compared to the previous month of0,1 persen. This amount was far below the target of the Fed, which was 2 percent for the inflation rate.

It was able to provide a compelling reason for the Fed to postpone the interest rate hike. This problem would be announced on Thursday (17/9).

It was also said by Analyst of First Asia Capital (FAC), David Sutyanto. He observed, on Wall Street, the stock index rose. This was triggered by speculation that the Fed will not raise interest rates this week.

“Markets that were waiting for the results of the Fed meeting this week, was expected not to raise interest rates,” he said, Thursday (17/9).

The uncertainty of interest rate hike of the Fed brought a negative impact on the movement of the rupiah against the US dollar. Rupiah was closed near the level of Rp 14,500 per US dollar in the spot market, Thursday (17/9).

While this morning, Rupiah was opened at Rp 14,420 per US dollar. It strengthened of 20.79 points or 0.14 percent compared to the previous day’s closing level of Rp 14,438 per US dollar.
